Namibia Confirms Measles Outbreak in Kunene

(MENAFN) Namibia's Ministry of Health and Social Services has officially confirmed a measles outbreak in the Opuwo district of the Kunene Region, following the detection of 10 positive cases out of 20 suspected ones, health officials reported Wednesday.

Minister of Health and Social Services, Esperance Luvindao, confirmed that all patients are currently in stable condition, with no fatalities recorded. She clarified that under national health protocols, an outbreak declaration is triggered when two out of five suspected cases are confirmed, which has now been met in this instance.

The ministry has escalated its response, introducing measures such as enhanced surveillance, amplified public education campaigns, and a large-scale vaccination drive focused on children aged six months to 15 years.

"As of Sept. 12, a total of 1,525 children had been vaccinated. A district-wide campaign is scheduled from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3, 2025, targeting over 28,000 children," Luvindao stated.

The minister emphasized that most of the confirmed cases were found among unvaccinated individuals, highlighting the critical need for routine childhood vaccinations.

She strongly encouraged parents and caregivers to ensure that all children are fully vaccinated and to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms like fever and rash appear.

Measles, a highly contagious viral illness, can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and dehydration, the ministry warned.
